Pio XI Glacier is located in Chile’s Bernardo O´Higgins National Park. The Seno Eyre Fjord in southern Chile is home to the Bruggen Glacier, also known as Pio XI Glacier, the largest western outflow from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Now about 64 km in length, it is one of the longest glaciers in the southern hemisphere outside of Antarctica. Unlike most glaciers worldwide, it advanced significantly since 1945, surging 5 km across the fjord and reaching the western shore in 1962 and cutting off Lake Greve from the sea.

The glacier continued advancing both northward and southward in the fjord to near its present position before stabilizing. Pio XI is as big as Santiago, with a surface of 1265 square kilometers, which grows in height, length and density every day. This is a unique quality, as all the other glaciers in Patagonia, and in most areas of the world, are losing extension, whereas Pio XI keeps continues to grow. Here, if weather conditions permit, visitors can either stand on the glacier or see it from a boat. Either way, it is a view that will never be forgotten.

The best time to visit is January to March, and later in the year from October to December. Activities for visitors include hiking, flora and fauna contemplation, and photography. The nearest town is a port for cargo in transit, and locals, at times, are amazed that there are any tourists in the area. However they are friendly, enjoy a chat, and shake your hand. Visitors may visit Puerto Edén, a settlement truly in the middle of nowhere. It is home to around 200 people, including the last eight of the Kawèsqa, the indigenous group that historically lived in the area.
