Isla Pan de Azúcar (Spanish ‘Sugarloaf Island’), is located 900m off shore from the Pan de Azúcar National Park in Chile. The Chilean coastline has very low rainfall and little green vegetation. It is part of the Park, and if you land on one of the mainland beaches you’ll see more than 20 species of cacti, and recreational beach shelters accessible to visitors who come off the nearby Chile Route 5 highway (part of the Pan-American Highway).

Isla Pan de Azúcar of one square kilometre area is home to thousands of Humboldt penguins. The penguins come here to feed and spend their days fishing, swimming, and diving as do many other birds found on this barren island. You’ll also see sea lions on the rocks. During a cruise along the perimeter of the island, visitors also encounter Kelp Gulls, Turkey Vultures, Blackish Oystercatchers, Peruvian boobies, pelicans, and the reclusive South American marine otter. The island can be reached by boat from the mainland but passengers are not allowed to leave the boat.

The whitish rocks and chalky-white sandy soil covering the island are a result of large numbers of sea birds that have visited the island for thousands of years, and have left behind droppings called guano. The Incas assigned great value to guano, restricting access to it and punishing any disturbance to the birds with death. Today it is mined on the mainland and is used as an ingredient in fertilizers, pyrotechnics, as an ingredient in smoke bombs, as a food preservative, and as a solid rocket propellant, as well as in glass and pottery enamels.
