Antofagasta is a port city in northern Chile, about 1,130 km north of Santiago. The last decade has seen a steady growth in the areas of construction, retail, hotel accommodations, population growth, and remarkable skyline development, mainly due to becoming a major mining centre. However, with its 20 km of beachfront and mild, dry climate it has also developed as a year-round beach resort. Outside the city limits one sees a stunning vast empty expanse of desert that approaches the beach. There is also the possibility of being able to visit the largest open-pit mine in the world.

The highlight of the shoreline is the Portada, an enormous rock located just to the north of town that the sea has steadily eroded into a dramatic natural arch. It is regarded by many as a symbol of this city, and highlights how really astonishing the northern coastline of Chile is. It is an especially amazing sight when the surf is wild. Many visit the salt lake of Salar de Atacama, a huge flamingo reserve. Here the landscape gets colourful and the volcanos look beautiful. Interestingly, Antofagasta today possesses a markedly European feel in its architecture and ambience. The clock tower of the Plaza Colon is an exact replica of Big Ben.

At Launa Cejar visitors can experience a swim similar to that of being in the Dead Sea. Those who want to learn more about Antofagasta can visit the Museo Regional, which in addition to its interesting exhibits on the history of the city and the mining industry, also holds a colourful collection of rock and mineral samples culled from the surrounding region. The incredible desert spectacle of El Tatio can only be viewed in the early morning, but the sight of the world’s highest geysers shooting up from the ground is well worth an early wake-up call.
