Twice I've used Clean Cruising, and have had excellent service both times, and with follow up information. I have and will further recommend you to others. Nothing was too much trouble.I'm hoping to do another cruise early next year, taking my grandson with me, so I'll be using Clean Cruising again. Thank you"

Ulukhaktok (aka Ulukhaqtuuq, Holman) lies 460km north of the Arctic Circle on the west coast of Victoria Island, in the Inuvik Region of the Northwest Territories, Canada. The small hamlet has a population of around 500. Hunting, trapping, and fishing are major sources of income. The first Ulukhaktok-area trading post was established in 1923. The area is inhabited, among various indigenous groups, by the Copper Inuit, so-named as they used and relied on native (pure) copper ingots gathered in the region to make cutting knives (ulus). The large bluff that overlooks Ulukhaktok was the source that provided both slate and copper used to make ulus and give the community its name.

Ulukhaktok effectively lies on the Northwest Passage sea route connecting the northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through the Arctic Ocean. Until 2009, the Arctic pack ice prevented regular marine shipping throughout most of the year. Arctic sea ice decline has rendered the waterways more navigable. The largest vessel to navigate the Northwest Passage is Crystal Serenity at 68,870 GT, in August 2016. It stopped in Ulukhaktok and Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island.

In 1960, the Canadian government began shipping housing units to Ulukhaktok. In the following years some families moved there permanently, while others lived there seasonally. The Copper Inuit have gradually adopted snowmobiles, satellite dish television service, and Christian churches. Many young people now speak English rather than Inuinnaqtun. Together, these introductions have created social change among the Copper Inuit. Ulukhaktok is home to the Holman Eskimo Co-op, producing arts and crafts, and lately prints. Interestingly, it has the world’s most northern golf course.
