The Smoking Hills are dotted along a 30 km section of coastline on the east coast of Cape Bathurst in Canada’s NW Territories. The coast faces Franklin Bay, which in turn lies to the SE of the Beaufort Sea. The coastline, at 70 degrees north, is near the mouth of the Horton River. Landings can be made to get up close to the natural fires burning exposed lignite (brown coal) and deposits of pyrite (rich in sulfur), and the smoke has acidified numerous small lakes nearby, as well as altered the vegetation locally. The best way to see the acrid white smoke is by helicopter. The fumes contain sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid and steam.

The 100 m high sea cliffs were named by English explorer Sir John Franklin during his 1826 expeditions. The next persons to visit the area were members of Captain Robert McClure’s party who were sent to find Franklin in 1852. The cliffs are listed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Northwest Territories. Some ponds in the Smoking Hills are very acidic, with pH values as low as 1.8 from water percolating through deposits of shale and ash and filling ponds located at the base of the seacliffs. Tundra ponds at the top of the seacliffs are acidified by absorption of the acidic smoke.

Today the site is visited by explorer cruise ships, trekking parties on the Horton River, and scientists interested in this natural source of pollution. Away from the area affected by the smoke, likely one will see herds of grazing muskoxen. The nearest community, about 105 km SE, is Paulatuk (‘place of coal’). It is named in recognition of the coal found in the area.
