The 96 km Saguenay River is a major river of Quebec, Canada. It is bordered by steep cliffs and has a very high flow rate. The river drains into the Saint Lawrence River at Tadoussac, where its cold waters merge with the warmer waters of the St. Lawrence River, creating a krill-rich feeding ground that draws marine mammals and birds. As many Beluga whales breed in the cold waters at its mouth, Tadoussac has become one of the best whale-watching areas in the world, and is also a popular site for sea kayaking. In these waters you may also encounter the rare Greenland shark.

Visitors can head out in a Zodiac, or simply watch from the shore. Good spots are the park viewing platform at Pointe-Noire, and giant granite boulders on the shore at Cap-de-Bon Desir 22 km to the north. Many different species of whales frequent this area, from the small, chubby, perpetually-smiling, all-white ‘threatened’ Beluga, to the world’s largest mammal, the nearly 30 m blue whale, which has a heart the size of a Volkswagen. Surrounded by three National parks and the Saguenay's Fjord, the region offers a multitude of exciting activities.

The unique, majestic and serene Saguenay Fjord National Park is rich in history. It is a bit off the beaten path, but that is what makes it so attractive, and preserves its natural beauty. Folk are friendly, prices good, and most are happy to give visitors tips and advice. Visit the Musee de la Petite Maison Blanche. The locals are very proud of this destination, which is well thought out, and doesn't take long to visit. Then there’s the church next door that has a beautiful Florentine arched interior that is also well worth visiting.
