Pond Inlet is a small, modern, attractive Inuit community (population 1550) located on northern Baffin Island above the 72nd parallel. The town is particularly picturesque hamlet, surrounded by massive icecapped mountains, dozens of glaciers, ice floes and explorable ice caves. No wonder Pond Inlet is considered one of Canada's "jewels of the North". This is a small, predominantly Inuit community in the Region of Nunavut. While its economy is largely service-based with the government as the largest employer, small businesses that serve the community, tourism, and art work are also found.

Surprisingly, although the community is not more than 1.5 km long, snowmobiles and ATV four-wheelers are the main modes of transportation. The landscape is every changing, between seasons and with passing icebergs, a community of happy children through to the elderly. In town are all the artefacts of local life, perhaps a drying polar bear skin, or sledges being prepared for winter. Average yearly temperatures range from -11 to -18 deg.C. The Mary River Iron Ore Mine, still in its developmental stage, is about 160km by air SSW of the community, and the economy is expected to boom once the mine is in full operation.

Barren-ground caribou, ringed Seal, narwhals and polar bears are just some of the wildlife encountered while travelling out on the land. The ocean is ice-free for as long as three and a half months when tourist cruise ships visit and goods can be transported to the community. Indeed, fresh food such as fruits, vegetables and milk is flown from Montreal to Pond Inlet - a distance of about 2,500 km - several times a week.
