Minto Inlet is situated in the Northwest Territories of Arctic Canada, on the western coast of Victoria Island. It is an arm of Amundsen Gulf, which is on one of the shipping routes of the western end of the Northwest Passage. The region was explored extensively in the mid 19th C in search of a northwest passage, and by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen between 1903 and 1906. The entire gulf is in the Arctic tundra climate region, characterised by extremely cold winters. In late winter the Amundsen Gulf and Minto Inlet are covered in sea ice. Most of the ice breaks up in July during a normal year.

Minto Inlet is 121 km long and between 13–40 km wide. It lies north of the tree line, though there are records of 1.5 m willow “forests” in valleys around Minto Inlet, and other herbaceous flora in the region. The surrounding islands are low smooth apparently bare rocks to around 300-400 m. Minto Inlet is also notable for its caribou herd calving grounds. Beluga whales, seals, Arctic char, cod, and even salmon use the waters of the gulf.

The native people of this region are the Copper Inuit, and English term taken from their use of native copper gathered along the lower Coppermine River and the Coronation Gulf (though these two locations are far to the south of the Inlet). The indigenous hunters made spears, bows and other weapons of copper.
