Isabella Bay, within the Niginganiq National Wildlife Area, is situated on the NE coast of Baffin Island, in Canada’s territory of Nunavut. The Bay lies about 100 km north of the Arctic Circle, and 470 km to the east, across David Strait and Baffin Bay, lies the coast of Greenland. Within Isabella Bay are the uninhabited Aulitivik and Aulitiving Islands, and the fjord that enters the bay extends over 100 km inland. The entire coastline is inhabited sparingly; indeed, Baffin Island’s entire population is only 11,000 persons.

The long, dark and cold winters of the bay give way to foggy, cloudy summers after the spring thaw in June and July, when the sea ice disappears. The area includes two deep offshore troughs that are rich in copepods, a main source of food for the 18 metre long, 70 tonne bowhead whale. The bay is a specialized sanctuary for these whales, a large and powerful marine mammal that can break through ice over 20 centimetres thick with the crown of its head. Up to 100 bowheads have been recorded at one time in Isabella Bay. It navigates and communicates under extensive ice fields using its sophisticated acoustic sensory skills.

Walrus, narwhals, and beluga whales also pass the coast on their migrations. Year-round fauna include the ringed seal, caribou, polar bear, Arctic fox, Arctic hare, lemming and the Arctic wolf. During the summer the coast is free of pack ice, and the ground snow drifts give way to a covering of dry grasses and lichens. The region is home to migratory birds – varieties of geese and the Arctic tern are well known – and gulls, sandpipers, King Eider, Long-tailed Duck, Dovekie, Northern Fulmar, plus many other varieties that come to nest.
