Herschel Island lies 5 km N of the coast of the Yukon Territory in Arctic Canada, close to the border with Alaska. In 1987, Herschel Island Territorial Park was created by the Government of Yukon and the Inuvialuit, in order to protect the island’s natural and historic resources. Most of the island is composed of level to gently sloping stable uplands, vegetated by cotton grass, ground shrubs and wildflowers. Indeed, from late June to early August, Herschel Island witnesses an explosion of colour. Its humid maritime climate during the growing season fosters a lush growth of tundra flowers, including forget-me-nots.

Nesting shorebirds and Arctic foxes are abundant on the surrounding tundra, and polar bears are often sighted offshore. Herschel Island stands directly in the path of the formidable Beaufort Gyre - a wind-driven ocean current - bringing with it abundant marine mammals and ice. The island contains many artefacts, including the oldest frame building in the Yukon and the original Pacific Steam Whaling Company house built in 1893. Also visit several other historic buildings relating to the whaling industry, and the North-West Mounted Police, who established a post there to assert Canadian sovereignty in 1903. Thanks to the dry, cold climate of Herschel Island, two of the old warehouses and many of the whalers' tiny cabins survive.

The Anglican Church Mission, established in 1897, stands by itself to the north of the other buildings. There are also more than 100 graves. Viewing wildlife, whale-watching and bird-watching are also very popular with visitors. The Northwest Passage was first sailed by Roald Amundsen in 1903-1906, he anchored near Herschel Island, and skied 800 km to the city of Eagle, Alaska. He sent a telegram announcing his success and skied the return trip. In August and September 2016 Crystal Serenity sailed through the northwest from Seward, Alaska, using Amundsen's route, and reached New York.
