Alert Bay is a small fishing village on Cormorant Island, British Columbia, Canada. The island, 4km long and only 700m at its narrowest, lies just off the north coast of Vancouver Island. It is home to some 1,600 residents, half being of the indigenous Kwakiutl people who have been there for several thousand years. The town has all modern facilities and faces a boat harbour with two marinas, fishing fleet, ferry terminal and water airport. Welcome sign and totem poles on shore reflect the friendliness of the inhabitants.

On the north side of the island is The Namgis Big House native museum, which features demonstrations of native dancing, and contains a wealth of information on the history, traditions and native art of Alert Bay. Many of the most beautiful artifacts are part of the Potlatch collection, which includes masks and regalia that relate to the gift-giving feasts practiced by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast of Canada. Adjacent to The Big House is the world's tallest totem pole, at 53m.

Known as 'Home of the Killer Whale,' Alert Bay is a 30-minute boat ride from the world famous 'rubbing beaches' of Robson Bight Ecological Reserve for the Orca. These whales rub on smooth pebble in shallow waters, a social and recreational behaviour peculiar to some pods of whales. Adventurous souls can take guided tours in kayaks, while the more timid can opt for the conventional whale watching charters aboard one of the many local touring vessels.
