Half Moon Caye is an island and official ‘natural monument’ of Belize. It is located 80 km SE of Belize City, and at the SE corner of the Lighthouse Reef Atoll, 41 km long and around 9 km wide. A natural monument is selected for its scenic beauty and unique geographical features, of which there are five in Belize. They are typically pristine, wilderness ecosystems. Half Moon Caye was the first nature reserve to have been established in Belize. It was first designated as a bird sanctuary in 1924 to protect the habitat of the red-footed booby birds.

Half Moon Caye is about 1.1 km long and up to 200 m wide. Two-thirds is covered by a littoral forest, primarily of the orange-flowered Ziricote tree, along with many coconut palms. As a breeding ground for the red-footed booby there’s plenty of guano to fertilise the ground. The SE part of the island is a sea turtle nesting ground from May to September. The island Leaf-toed Gecko is endemic.

The island is surrounded by a fringing reef, inside of which the lagoon has a high density of corals and fish. There are many dive sites. The Half Moono Caye Wall is a well-known location called the “6,000 feet of vertical abyss”. (The sea drops to 3.5 km depth off the eastern shore of the atoll.) Divers see a diversity of marine life in spur-and-groove canyons including corals, garden eels, and spectacular sponge formations. Eagle rays, sea turtles (Loggerhead, Hawksbill, and Green) and groupers are often seen swimming. NOTE: Half Moon Cay is a private island in the Bahamas.
