Varna is the largest city and seaside resort on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and the third largest city in Bulgaria. Because of its history and its economic and cultural significance, it is often called the Sea Capital of Bulgaria. Varna’s origins date back almost five millennia, but it wasn’t until seafaring Greeks founded a colony there in 585 BC that the town became a port. The modern city is both a shipyard and port for incoming freighters and the navy, and a riviera town visited by tourists. Varna is a cosmopolitan place, pleasant to stroll through, with its Baroque, turn-of-the-century buildings and its contemporary architecture pleasantly blended with shady promenades.

City landmarks include the Varna Archaeological Museum, exhibiting the Gold of Varna, a cache of chalcolithic grave-goods, which constitute the oldest gold treasure in the world. Among the rest of the museums, some of the most interesting ones are: the Maritime Museum collection that includes articles related to the Bulgarian military and commercial shipping; and the Ethnographic Museum that presents the rich diversity of culture and the style of life of the population in Varna region from the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. As a cultural centre, Varna has built one of the largest and richest fine arts galleries in Bulgaria.

In the Dolphinarium, situated in the Park by the Sea, tourists can enjoy a unique dolphin show presented in an interesting way by the dolphins and their trainers. It includes multiple attractions, such as acrobatics, balancing, music, singing, dancing, and games with the audience. Its duration is 40 minutes. Other places of interest include: an exposition of icons painted in the Age of Revival, in the 18thC St. Atanasius church; and one of the most interesting historical landmarks of the town - the Roman Baths - the largest Roman bath on the Balkan Peninsula.
