The Ribbon Reefs is a system of 10 large reefs in the Coral Sea, stretching over 100 km along the edge of and parallel to Australia's eastern continental shelf. Each reef is separated by a deep water channel. Located about 110 km to 190 km NE of Cairns and Port Douglas, they lie beyond the reach of day boats. Cooktown due W is closer at 58 km. The reefs are good to dive all year round, with the best time being between April and January. Ribbon Reef 5 forms one of the best sections for divers that the Great Barrier Reef has to offer.

The reefs come up to about two metres below the surface, ideal for long safety stops and ideal for snorkellers as well as novice and advanced divers. You can expect to dive depths in the 10- to 30-metre range and some spectacular wall dives are possible along the outer edges of the Ribbon Reefs. Visibility is between 12 and 30 metres, very much influenced by the daily water exchange with the tides, and run-offs from the land after strong rainfalls. Features of the Ribbon Reefs are lush coral gardens and many spectacular pinnacles and bommies (coral mountains) surrounded by schools of fish.

The variety of fish is impressive: anemone fish, damsels, parrotfish, cuttlefish, pufferfish, maori wrasse, napoleon fish and also smaller pelagic fish like all kinds of reef sharks, trevally, tuna, mackerel and barracuda. There is an abundance of other marine creatures - the variety of life is most stunning and produces a very colourful picture. Depending on the cruise ship size and equipment, one may view corals from a glass-bottomed boat, or take a cruise ship helicopter for an aerial view.
