Cruises visiting Raft Point & all Raft Point cruises for  2019

View Raft Point 2019 cruises for 1 ships listing 9 cruises from Raft Point with today's best deals!

Raft Point is an uninhabited headland with imposing steep cliffs on the Timor Sea, near the mouth of the Sale River in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. It overlooks a small sandy bay served by several creeks, and is ideal for crabbing and some amazing fishing. Raft Point is a base for shore expeditions to some of the country's most remarkable Aboriginal rock art. Walk for about 20 minutes with a 150 m uphill climb to see the large spectacular pictures of many quality Wandjina figures amongst other depictions of marine and wildlife – dugongs, original inhabitants and X-ray fish.

The hike is certainly worth the effort. Just offshore of the rock art is Steep Island, edged by steep cliffs rising to 100 m from the sea. Nearby is Montgomery Reef, Australia’s largest inshore reef, 25 km offshore to the NW of Raft Point. The reef is only visible as the tide drops rapidly away, when a raging torrent of water cascades off the top of this 270 sq.km. reef. Miles of surrounding reef appear to slowly rise out of the ocean. Tides can reach 10m. At low tide lagoons, sandstone islets and mangroves are exposed, giving view to corals, sponges, crabs, cushion stars, turtles and octopuses.

The reef attracts migratory wading birds, feeding turtles, manta rays, black tipped reef sharks, and dugongs. The scene is best viewed from a helicopter or light aeroplane. Many tours visit the area daily. Likely you’ll see yachts anchored just off Raft Point. They also visit other local attractions: the Sale River, Red Cone Inlet, Vinnys Creek and Melomys Island.
