The Prince Regent River is located in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The River is in the SE corner of the St George Basin, which is a mix of rocky mangrove islands, reefs and sandbars. Entering the basin through whirlpools, rocks and islands is exciting. The whole area including the Prince Regent River comprises the Prince Regent Nature Reserve of more than 600,000 hectares, and affords stunning views of Mt Waterloo and Mt Trafalgar. It is a region of immense significance to Aboriginal people; their culture and heritage and their occupation of the area over thousands of years.

The river is unique in that it is sourced 50 km from the coast at an elevation of about 800 m, and drops through a rugged gorge that results in spectacular sites. The famous terraced waterfall King's Cascades provides the highly recommended option of climbing to the top of the falls for a swim in the magnificent freshwater pools. If the climb sounds too daunting you may be able to take a helicopter ride for a memorable flight along the river, and see the Pitta Gorge where the river runs almost entirely straight between near vertical cliffs, and the Python Cliffs. Or you could fish the productive river system.

The entire area is culturally rich with historic art and artefacts, including the infamous and ancient Gwion rock art. Look out for the Jabiru and Magpie Geese that can be seen on the tidal flats in many of the inlets. The River, the numerous off shore islands, together with the magnificent coastal scenery of sandstone cliffs falling directly into the sea, make this an unforgettable experience.
