Norfolk Island is a small inhabited island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. With a sub-tropical climate tempered by the surrounding sea, tourists will find a host of things to do, including bush walking, visiting elegant convict-built Georgian buildings, bicycling, and fishing. Visit Emily Bay, where the great crescent shaped beach offers excellent safe swimming for families and snorkelling over coral reefs. Don’t miss Captain Cook’s Monument, a beautiful lookout overlooking the very small beach where Cook is believed to have landed and that is also a haven for the many seabirds.

The history of the island is amazing, for in its picture-postcard setting Britain established one of the most brutal penal colonies in its history - Old Kingston Town - a place where death was often welcomed by the convicts. Eventually the HMAV Bounty mutineers resettled there from the Pitcairn Islands. Visit these outstandingly preserved buildings, which include the Maritime Museum and the historical house at 10 Quality Row, as well as experience the sound and light shows re-enacting the mutiny on the Bounty.

The Australian Federal Government has allocated $13 million to upgrade Cascade Jetty and Kingston Jetty, and to construct special tender boats. The grant will attract more cruise ships to Norfolk Island and could attract up to 100,000 visitors annually. On the island there is no public transport, but with an untouched and world recognised area of rainforest and 80 km of mostly sealed roads and no traffic lights, it is very relaxing to drive a readily available hire car. There is also some fine duty free shopping, and the local tasty treats of periwinkles and banana dumplings to try. You will surely be impressed by Norfolk, where they speak their own special language and welcome you in their own unique way.
