The Mitchell River, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, rises NE of Sharp Hill and flows 100 km NW into the Indian Ocean. The mouth of the river lies midway between Broome and Darwin. It lies within the Mitchell River National Park, accessible by 4WD or coastal explorer vessel. For outback scenery and Aboriginal culture, Mitchell River National Park in the rugged Kimberley region is among the best in Australia. The two main features of the park are Mitchell Falls and Surveyors Pool. (The latter is 25 km from the mouth then 10km east on a tributary 10km: difficult to access.)

The highlight of the Mitchell Plateau is the spectacular Mitchell Falls, a four-tiered series of drops with a combined height of 80 metres, over which the river cascades into a deep pool. It can be approached by small boat roughly 40 km upstream from the river mouth, by 4WD, and by air. A helicopter ride over the falls is surely an unforgettable experience. The Mitchell Plateau is of immense cultural and biological significance. The area is rich in the well known Wandjina and Bradshaw art. Of the flora, the most conspicuous are the Livistona fan palms. Some as old as 300 years stretch up to 18 metres into the clear blue skies. Fauna include the Saltwater Crocodile, King Brown snake and Taipan.

Renowned for its barramundi, one of nine species of fresh water fish in the river, fishing is popular, but this is serious crocodile country and all signs should be well observed. The Mitchell River is one of the best rivers in the Kimberley to explore. The combination of isolation, fishing, scenery, waterfalls, rocks, many ancient rock art sites most of which have remained untouched for thousands of years, sandbars and crocodiles makes for a fascinating stopover, off the usual cruising route.
