Lord Howe Island lies 600 km east of the Australian mainland in the sub-tropical waters of the Tasman Sea. It was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1982 for its rare collection of plants, birds, marine life and exceptional natural beauty. It is one of just a handful of island groups in the world to be awarded a World Heritage listing. Born of a volcanic eruption, the calm, clear, turquoise waters of its lagoon, enclosed by a 6 km long coral reef - the southernmost coral reef in the world - is a haven for snorkellers, especially as in places the coral is just metres from the beach.

There is also a glass-bottomed boat for exploring the outer reef. You could enjoy some bush walking at the Valley of Shadows and thoroughly enjoy the 40 m high forests. If interested in the historical background of the island, then be sure to visit the Museum and the Visitor Centre, with its great audio-visual presentations. A 'must see' would be a visit to Thompsons General Store, which apart from offering delightful fresh bread, pies and pastries, provides visitors with the opportunity to take a fishing trip.
