King George River enters Koolama Bay and the Timor Sea from the Gardner Plateau in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The 112km river was named after King George V in 1911 by the English explorer Chas Conigrave after a privately funded expedition in the area. Over many thousands of years the river has cut back into the plateau creating stunning sheer walls and majestic waterfalls at the end of several canyons. Access from large cruise ships is by launch, but smaller vessels can negotiate right to the twin falls, 12 km upstream, which have a drop of 84 m.

The falls, ‘the Kimberley’s most magnificent treasure’, are strongest from late December to early May. They were featured in Baz Luhrmann's 2008 film, Australia. As you venture upstream on the tidal river, between towering red sandstone cliffs, you’ll pass an amazing balancing rock, and about a kilometre further on are four fine aboriginal art galleries. On the main river, to the eastern side of the falls, there is a most beautiful 'hanging garden' of maiden hair and herring-bone ferns. There are some exciting uphill climbs to the top of the gorge, but scenic helicopter flights are also available.

There is a fine sandy beach near the mouth of the river between the mangroves and the overhanging cliffs. This is ideal for barbecues, with flat stones for tables and no annoying insects, but one must be aware of the sharks and crocodiles. Opposite the beach there is a spectacular narrow gorge with very cold water swimming holes. This crocodile and bird watchers paradise has to be seen to be believed.
