Geelong is a port city located on Corio Bay and the Barwon River in the Australian state of Victoria. Cruise ships berth here at Cunningham Pier, an hour’s drive from the Melbourne CBD. Geelong was first settled when gold was discovered at nearby Ballarat in 1851. With a stable temperate climate offering four distinct seasons, it quickly grew to the modern city it is today. Geelong’s large commercial centre extends down to the foreshore, where visitors can explore popular beach-front attractions such as the surfing beach on Corio Bay and the Eastern Beach with its swimming enclosure.

Also of importance are the coastal walks that are dotted with bollards depicting historic characters, as well as elegant buildings and colourful parks. Major tourist attractions include the Old Geelong Goal, the scenic Buckley Falls, and the National Wool Museum in the city, as well as more than 30 fascinating historical buildings listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. With many kilometres of bicycle trails covering the shores of Corio Bay and the Barwon River parklands, many visitors hire a bicycle. The Bellarine Peninsula Rail Trail runs beside the tourist railway, steam train, and you may wish to take your bike on the train for part of the journey.

The waterfront is Geelong’s new playground. Once a run-down derelict area left over from the days of a wool shipping port, this region has been transformed into one of Australia’s finest waterfront precincts. Tens of millions of dollars from both government and corporate investments have transformed the area into the jewel of Geelong. Restaurants, hotels, apartments and leisure areas combine to make Geelong’s waterfront a favourite for locals and visitors alike. Today the waterfront area is a vibrant meeting place, and the jewel in our city’s crown. The waterfront hosts a full calendar of events including the Australia Day Weekend’s Festival of Sails, and New Years Eve Festivities.
