Western Australia's most popular tourist town Esperance is located on the Southern Ocean around half way between Albany and the South Australian border. It experiences a Mediterranean climate but is subject to wide variations in the weather. Originally named by French explorers, it has been a centre for whaling and mining. Today it has been voted as having Australia's whitest sand. The beach is found at Lucky Bay and is set against a stunning seascape of 110 islands of the Recherche Archipelago. Indeed even kangaroos choose to lounge here. The calm, clear waters of Blue Haven Beach and Twilight Cove, just a short drive from town, are idyllic spots for swimming and snorkelling.

Choose between four wheel drive safaris to nearby National Parks, coach tours, helicopter tours, island cruises, diving, fishing, abseiling, and even sand boarding. Check out the arts centre and galleries, making time to drop into the museum to view what's left of the NASA Skylab after it slammed back down to Earth. On the way, be amazed at a slice of ancient druid history, with a full-size replica of Stonehenge. Also well worth visiting are the museum, arts centre, art galleries and the boutique aquarium with a touch pool for the children.

A major nearby tourist attraction, 20 minutes away from the town centre, is the Cape Le Grand National Park, which offers a picturesque coast of largely granite terrain and sheltered white sand beaches. Also nearby are a number of salt lakes, including Pink Lake, which gains its rosy hue from red algae living within its waters. This is a wonderful spot at which to relax.
