Coles Bay, the hub of tourism on Tasmania's east coast, is the main access point to Freycinet National Park. Whalers, farmers, tin and coal miners, were some of the many people who originally settled here, but today the population of around five hundred is outnumbered by the numerous tourists. The town is on the northern end of Great Oyster Bay with stunning views of the red and pink granite peaks known as The Hazards, on the Freycinet Peninsula. Each Easter the town is one of the three locations for the Australian Three Peaks Race, a continuous sailing and running event starting at Beauty Point just north of Launceston and ending at Hobart, with runners scaling three mountains including Mount Freycinet.

While the remains of mine shafts, original dwellings and whalers’ camps are very well worth visiting, it is the picture perfect scenery that attracts most attention. Secluded bays, beaches of soft clear sand, and crystal clear waters dominated by jagged pink granite peaks, together with cliffs that drop sheer into the sea, simply take one's breath away.
