Port Lockroy is a natural harbour on the SW shore of Wiencke Island, off the Antarctic Peninsula of the British Antarctic Territory. After its discovery in 1904 by a French Antarctic Expedition, it was used for whaling and British military operations during World War II, and then continued to operate as a British research station until 1962. The station, also known as Port Lockroy, is situated on small Goudier Island in the harbour, backed by the mountains and glaciers of Wiencke Island. In 1996 the port was renovated, and is now designated as an Historic Site under the Antarctic Treaty.

It is now a museum and post office operated by the United Kingdom Antarctic Heritage Trust, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations for cruise-ship passengers in Antarctica. The Museum would be one of the coolest museums one could ever visit. It is extraordinary - not because of what is in it, but where it is - in Antarctica! With cans of food, girly posters on the walls, an old wooden stove, and the recipe book open to 'Seal Brains on Toast', it seems almost unreal. Proceeds from the small souvenir shop fund the upkeep of the site and other historic sites and monuments in Antarctica.

The best thing of all, though, are the gentoo penguins that have made the island their territory, and their little pathways and constant noise and smell mean that it is truly a home. Studies have shown that the presence of visitors does not harm the penguin colonies; in fact the regular presence of humans keeps Skuas away (predatory birds). Incidentally, letters posted, though collected daily, may take some time to make their way to the Falklands and then to their mailing address.
