Falmouth is a coastal town on the SW of the island of Antigua, one half of the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda in the Leeward Islands, Eastern Caribbean. The country was named by Christopher Columbus in 1493. (In September 2017 Barbuda, 42 km to the north, was 95% decimated by Hurricane Irma.) Falmouth lies aside one of the many natural harbours on Antigua’s shoreline. Smaller ships enter Falmouth Harbour, while mega cruise ships dock 14 km to the NW at the capital St Johns. The island of Antigua has a complex coastline of safe harbors, and a protective, nearly unbroken wall of coral reef.

Overlooking Falmouth are the ruins of Fort George on Monk’s Hill, completed around 1715. The ruins are overgrown with low scrubs, hiding its massive cisterns, cemetery, stone buildings and crumbling ramparts. A few kilometres out of town is St Barnabus Anglican Church, originally a school and one of the oldest structures on the island. Adjacent to Falmouth is English Harbour, rich in Antigua’s colonial history and centre of the island’s top sites. The Lookout in Shirley Heights military complex conveyed signals via Monk’s Hill to St John’s across the island. Fort Berkeley defended the harbour with 29 large cannons, and which is now a vantage point to watch exotic yachts under sail.

In 1784 the legendary Admiral Horatio Nelson sailed to Antigua and established Great Britain's most important Caribbean base. Nelson’s Dockyard is the only surviving Georgian naval dockyard in the world, once used during the Caribbean wars with the French, Spanish and Dutch in the 18th and 19th centuries. This National Park houses restaurants, art galleries, boutiques and gift shops. Today, try out a few hours on a racing yacht for excitement, very popular with visitors. Oh yes, and search out the Carib Bean Coffee Company, set in a quaint cottage, for friendly service and great aromas.
