P&O Britannia launches in Southampton

P&O Britannia is launched
On 10 March the latest addition to the P&O British fleet, Britannia, received her blessing and was officially named by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II in Southampton.

The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh appeared to be in very good spirits during the ceremony, which comes two decades after she named the P&O Cruises ship Oriana.

Our Sales Director, Jean Summers, was part of a small Australian contingent invited to attend the historic event and be one of the first to experience the stunning new vessel.

P&O Britannia launches

On arrival at Southampton, Britannia's size is unmistakeable as she looms over the terminal. The red carpet was rolled out for arrivals, and the grey skies couldn't take away from how majestic Britannia looked in harbour. P&O’s newest and by far its largest vessel is of the same class as Royal Princess and Regal Princess, but with some changes to give it a truly modern British feeling.

At the naming ceremony, the Regimental Band of the Irish Guards kept their tunics hidden under grey greatcoats but the Band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth livened things up with white helmets and red sashes. Best of all, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, wearing bright red sporrans and socks, wowed the audience with energetic versions of rock classics.

The ceremony’s host, comedian Rob Brydon, threw in a few colourful jokes, and the Right Rev Jonathan Frost, Bishop of Southampton, stood on stage in a red-and-white get-up that would not have looked out of place at St Mary’s Stadium, home of his city’s football team.

A 3ft high magnum of Wiston sparkling English wine did the honours, when, at the invitation of Captain Paul Brown, the Queen pressed a big blue button to send it crashing against Britannia’s hull, and a blizzard of patriotic confetti filled the air.

P&O Britannia launches

Britannia’s maiden voyage of 14 nights from Southampton was on 14 March 2015 heads for Spain, Monte Carlo and Rome’s port. This is followed by cruises to sub-Arctic Norway, Canary Islands, Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, and around the British Isles. On October 23 2015 she crosses the Atlantic for Barbados (over 14 nights) for a season in the Caribbean before returning to Southampton.

Britannia offers a variety of 14 night cruises in the Caribbean, until she returns to the UK in February 2016. This ship is suited to families, singles, young and old. Each age and interest group will find onboard facilities and activities to their liking. To view all departures please visit P&O Brittania.

Fares are constant throughout the year including school holidays.

Britannia - P&O's most impressive British ship
Proving that bigger is definitely better, P&O Cruises have taken delivery of the largest ever cruise ship for the British market.

At 142,000 GT and carrying 3647 passengers, P&O Britannia boasts £1 million worth of art, nine entertainment places to keep the family occupied, including a 936-seat theatre, four pools, and 13 places to eat.

P&O Britannia launches

The 1837 staterooms include Suites, Deluxe Balcony, Outside Balcony, and Inside cabins. For the first time on a P&O ship all outside staterooms have balconies. There are 27 very comfortable single cabins, both inside and with a balcony.

In-cabin entertainment on large flat screen TVs comes with films on demand. Cabins have a mini-bar, writing desk, tea and coffee making facilities, safe, hair-dryer, bathroom with glass shower screens, and a pamper pack. The layout is roomy, with muted decor and original artworks. All balconies have chairs and table.

P&O Britannia launches

P&O UK have teamed up with 5 of Britain's greatest foodies, wine expert Olly Smith, Master Patissier Eric Lanlard, Head Chef James Martin, world-reknowned Marco Pierre White and twice Michellin starred Atul Kochhar to offer onboard cooking classes in addition to exceptional variety and high quality cuisine.

In addition to the 3 main dining rooms, you can also enjoy buffet meals in a classy setting at Horizon. Near the pool take a Grab and Go snack, burgers and the like from the Grill, gourmet pizzas, and classic fish and chips. In the atrium Master Pâtissier Eric Lanlard oversees the Market Café with its spread of fine foods.

Order cocktails at top deck The Crow’s Nest, or the atrium’s Blue Bar. Browse the Internet or read a book with coffee and pastries in the Java Café. The Limelight Club offers dining along with a show and good conversation.

P&O Britannia launches

Cruising with Britannia is suited to cosmopolitan British tastes. In the Headliners Theatre, with its stunning LED backdrop, take in West End and Broadway style shows, and comedians you can really have a laugh with.

You’ll be surprised when Britannia’s Strictly Come Dancing performers take to the top deck on selected cruises. Join in yourself, or take lessons, down below on the Crystal Room’s dance floor. The Live Lounge is the venue for singers and bands, turning into a nightclub in the evenings. The Studio is a multi-purpose venue presenting talks, guest speakers, films, plays, game shows and music recitals.
