Meet Queen Victoria & Queen Mary 2

Cunard
Step back into The Golden Age of Ocean Travel, a time when liners at sea were the embodiment of the good life. The classic traditions of the grand ocean voyage are very much alive, aboard the luxury ocean liners of Cunard - Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth - proving once again that, with Cunard, the journey may be even more magnificent than the destination.

The Industrial Revolution had progressed far enough by the 1830's to make the idea of transatlantic communication by means of a fleet of steamships plausible. The desire for dependable delivery of the mail on which imperial communication and commerce depended prompted the government of Her Majesty Queen Victoria to invite interested parties to bid for a contract to provide this service.

Samuel Cunard of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was the successful contender. His contract to deliver the mail across the Atlantic from Great Britain to North America was signed on May 4, 1839, and originally involved a commitment to provide three steamships of 800 tons and 300 horsepower. Samuel Cunard was a highly successful and enterprising Canadian businessman and one of a group of 12 individuals who directed the affairs of Nova Scotia. Cunard had the reputation for being not only a very astute businessman but also an individual with exceptional diplomatic ability.

What is White Star Service?
Cunard is synonymous with elegance, luxury and its renowned White Star Service which sets the standard by which all others are judged. Cunard's commitment to ensuring each guest is pampered begins at the White Star Academy where each crew member is trained to provide impeccable service.

The guest's experience of Cunard's White Star programme begins with the classic white gloved embarkation greeting and once on board, all crew will ensure no detail is overlooked. From the exquisite White Gloved Afternoon Tea Service in the Queens Room to a personalised concierge service, every moment on board is extraordinary and every guest is a valued member of the Cunard family.

Famous Faces from Cunard's History
Below lists of some of the stars that chose the ultimate way to cross in the golden days of transatlantic cruising. It was the one time when stars could escape their admiring public and ordinary guests were treated like stars.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Rita Hayworth, Queen Elizabeth – The Queen Mother, Debbie Reynolds, Ginger Rogers, The Duke of Windsor, Winston Churchill, Ronald Colman, Bing Crosby, Walt Disney, Duke Ellington, Cary Grant, Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Elizabeth Taylor & many more......

Life aboard Queen Victoria
Queen Victoria, also known as QV, is a true Cunarder — with all the regal, breathtaking splendour you would imagine from a luxury Cunard ocean liner, combined with an airy, contemporary ambience. As you embark, you'll encounter the dramatic three-tier Grand Lobby, whose magnificent staircase and eye-catching artwork offers an exceptional taste of life aboard this ship.

Queen Victoria offers a British travel experience, with formal dressing for dinner, liner-style décor, and world-wide itineraries, yet with international staff. What stands out? Edwardian/Victorian public rooms, British afternoon teas, Royal Arcade of shops (Harrods, Royal Doulton and Wedgwood), 6000-book library, Golden Lion Pub, and intellectual lectures. She is best suited to couples and single travellers who enjoy features of dressing up for dinner and a British ambiance. Guests feel comfortable in a cruise ship approaching that of an ocean liner. She was indeed built to cross the Atlantic and Pacific. Service at all times and in all locations is impeccable Cunard standard.

Life aboard Queen Mary 2
Queen Mary 2, affectionately known as QM2, was famous even before her first sailing and a worthy heir to Cunard's rich legacy. As the flagship of the world's most respected fleet of luxury ocean liners, you'll delight in her accommodation and renowned restaurants, her breathtaking Grand Lobby and the amazing array of unsurpassed amenities she offers. Queen Mary 2 is the only ship still sailing a Transatlantic cruise schedule each year.

QM2 is the largest ocean liner ever built (three cruise ships are larger), built to weather the harsh North Atlantic, and faster than any cruise ship (at 56 kph). She is one of the few ships of today with remnants of a class system, linking staterooms with dining venues, and guests can bring their pets. This vessel offers the finest grandeur and décor of any ship built to date. On a QM2 cruise ordinary travellers can feel like royalty for a week or two. More than 5000 specially commissioned works of art are visible in the public rooms, corridors, staterooms and lobbies.

Many of the major public rooms are on the lowest decks: the Illuminations theatre, cinema and planetarium, Royal Court Theatre, Grand Lobby, Empire Casino, restaurants, shopping arcade, bars and clubs are on decks 2 and 3. On Deck 7 are the Queen's Grill and Princess Grill restaurants for higher-fare passengers. Amenities include the largest ballroom at sea in the Queens Room, and lavish musicals in the Royal Court Theatre. At mealtime expect a traditional setting dressed formally or semi-formally. The ship is aimed at the North American and British markets – or anyone with an appreciation of British traditions.
