Terri’s voyage aboard Viking Mars through Canada and New England during autumn was a seamless blend of cultural enrichment, natural beauty, and refined cruising.  The itinerary offered a rich tapestry of experiences to immersive cultural encounters with Indigenous communities and scenic explorations. Onboard life was equally rewarding, featuring world-class dining, engaging enrichment programs, and tranquil wellness offerings such as the Nordic Spa. Viking’s adult-only, no-casino atmosphere fostered a relaxed and sophisticated environment, while included excursions, flexible dining, and curated entertainment ensured a personalized and memorable cruise.

It felt like Christmas had come early when I was invited to revisit one of my favourite destinations — Canada and New England in autumn — and even better, aboard Viking Mars.

Flying with Air Canada made the journey seamless. The friendly Canadian welcome and easy transit through Vancouver to Montreal, now simplified with self-service passport scanning, got things off to a smooth start. Even with a late-night arrival in Montreal, Viking’s cheery representative was ready to escort us and our luggage directly to the ship.

Despite the hour, embarkation was quick and efficient. To my delight, Viking had provided an impressive spread in my stateroom — a thoughtful touch for a weary, hungry traveller. We were fortunate to enjoy the first of three overnight stays here, giving us a full day to explore. I joined a guided walking tour of Old Montreal, where our knowledgeable guide shared fascinating political and historical insights. Later, I settled in on the Aquavit Terrace at the aft of Deck 7 to toast our sunset sailaway — a ritual I would come to love.

Our next stop was Quebec City. Having visited before, I opted for a tour to a nearby First Nations village. The Huron-Wendat people shared their rich cultural traditions — they were master fishermen and experts in curing meat and fish. Viking’s included audio devices made it easy to hear the guide, even from the back of the group.

Saguenay offered a stunning natural backdrop and a variety of shore options. I visited an organic farm and enjoyed a delicious lunch while learning about local life. This port also gave me the best glimpse of the changing autumn foliage, which was just beginning to show its full glory. In the charming town of Gaspé, I enjoyed a casual stroll and scenic harbour views.

Halifax, our final Canadian port, was perfect for the included Hop-On Hop-Off bus tour. As always, this format allowed for flexible exploration, and I appreciated our guide’s insider tips — including a visit to the rooftop garden café at the city library, a local gem.

Sailing into Boston, our second overnight stay, brought a new energy. On day one, I joined a walking and eating tour of Little Italy — with pizza, pasta, and cannoli at five different spots, it was a true feast for the senses. The next day, a historical walking tour brought the American Revolution to life. Boston’s revitalised city centre was clean, walkable, and full of charm.

Our final port was New York City — fittingly, for an overnight. I do like to find a great spot for sailaways and sail-ins, and I decided the pool and spa on the Aquavit Terrace was the place to be. The waiters thought this was a super idea and made sure I had a mimosa in hand to toast our arrival into Manhattan — an unforgettable way to sail into the city that never sleeps. Docked just 20 minutes from Times Square, I joined a city lights tour that took us across to Brooklyn for a prime view of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline. Later, the Empire State Building lived up to every expectation — even in the drizzle, the views stretched endlessly across the cityscape.

Highlights

It’s always the small acts of service that I remember and the fact that my cabin stewards placed exactly the number of book marks for each of my books I had on my bedside table on the first day, really touched my book loving heart!

Dining aboard Viking Mars was a daily highlight. Breakfasts were enjoyed in the World Café, The Restaurant, Mamsen’s (don’t miss the waffles with Norwegian cheese), or even on my balcony via stateroom service. I became a fan of the daily smoothies — always a fun surprise.

There’s no shortage of culinary indulgence onboard. Lobster Night in the World Café is a must, and the two specialty dining venues — Manfredi’s and The Chef’s Table — require reservations but carry no extra charge. I also joined the solo travellers’ dinner at Manfredi’s private dining room, a wonderful way to connect with others sailing alone.

A standout evening experience was the Pool Grill BBQ with live music and dancing — casual, fun, and delicious. Lunches on sea days included themed events at the Aquavit Terrace, and for a touch of refinement, the Wintergarden’s afternoon teas were not to be missed.

Cruise Tip

I highly recommend adding the Silver Spirits Beverage package, it means any cocktails, premium wines and activities like Spirit and Wine tasting events are all included.

Viking’s enrichment program adds genuine value. Our guest lecturer, Melinda Bates — who served in the Clinton White House — offered entertaining and insightful talks about her time organising high-profile events in Washington.

One feature not to miss: the Nordic Spa. With its saunas, cold plunge, snow grotto, and ice bucket, it offers an invigorating experience — all included in the fare. I only discovered it late in the cruise and immediately wished I’d gone earlier.

While Viking doesn’t lean into the heavily structured activity model of some cruise lines, there’s still plenty on offer — from live music and nightly shows to an impressive library, games, and conversation spaces. The two-level Explorer’s Lounge on Decks 6 and 7 quickly became one of my favourite spots to relax and take in the sea views.
Self-service laundries on most stateroom decks were surprisingly easy to access — I never had to wait, even near the end of the cruise.

Disembarkation was as smooth as arrival. Viking offered several transfer options, including the chance to explore Manhattan before our evening flight. I visited the deeply moving World Trade Center Memorial, thoughtfully designed and beautifully executed. We were later dropped at Newark Airport, which was among the best I’ve travelled through.

Viking’s adult-only, no-casino model offers a more refined, relaxed experience — a refreshing change. With included Wi-Fi, beverages, and a complimentary shore excursion in each port, the value is hard to beat. As I write, I’m already feeling nostalgic for my time on Mars. Next stop? Perhaps river… or expedition. With Viking, the choice is always exceptional.
