There’s nothing quite like a short coastal cruise to press pause on real life – and the Diamond Princess delivered exactly that. Sailing from Brisbane to Sydney over four nights, with a scenic stop in Newcastle, this cruise was the perfect blend of rest, recreation and research. Ideal for those seeking a sampler of the Princess experience, this itinerary showed off the brand’s signature style, service and tech upgrades in just the right dose.

Home for the journey was a Balcony cabin on Deck 12 (Aloha) – cabin A624 to be precise. Positioned perfectly for quick access to the pool deck and Horizon Court, the cabin was modern, quiet and surprisingly spacious. The balcony served up ocean views and morning coffee moments like a dream. Cleanliness was impeccable, and turndown service was smooth and non-intrusive. Despite being opposite the laundromat, there was no noise disruption. The laundromat is locked after hours, so guests nearby aren’t disturbed overnight.

The Princess MedallionClass experience deserves its own standing ovation. From the moment we boarded, the Medallion worked overtime: unlocking our door as we approached, ordering drinks with a few taps, tracking down friends (or strategically avoiding them), and even guiding us around the ship like a digital concierge. Guests love it. Tech-phobic clients needn’t worry, as staff are always on hand to help, and the interface is impressively intuitive. At one point I lost my Medallion, but staff were able to pinpoint its exact location – a surprisingly helpful feature.

Highlights

The key takeaways from this voyage were clear. The MedallionClass technology stood out as a real highlight, offering effortless convenience that clients will love, particularly those who enjoy a touch of luxury with their logistics

We committed fully to the main dining room and were rewarded handsomely. Each night brought attentive service, elegant presentation and a rotating menu that was both comforting and creative. Special mention goes to the soufflé, which we ordered more than once. Staff were friendly without being overbearing, and meals always felt like an occasion – even when we showed up in trivia gear.

While we didn’t join in ourselves, we enjoyed watching the energy of the Zumba classes held in the lounge. There’s something infectious about a group of passengers dancing with gusto – great entertainment and a reminder that Princess knows how to keep all ages engaged.

Our call to Newcastle was a breeze, thanks to well-organised courtesy shuttles that made venturing into town simple and stress-free. Guests could explore at their own pace, whether hitting the beaches, grabbing a flat white, or poking around historic sites. It’s a relaxed port with genuine local flavour – ideal for DIY exploring.

Cruise Tip

Daytime trivia quickly became a highlight, hosted with humour and offering a fun way to meet fellow passengers. Some of the questions were stumpers (obscure flag trivia, anyone?), but that only added to the charm.

For those curious about cruising or seasoned travellers wanting a quick escape, this four-night Princess voyage is a gem. It’s long enough to feel like a holiday, short enough to squeeze into a working week, and full of thoughtful touches that showcase what Princess does best.
