Ponant (an archaic French naval term for "West") is a French cruise line based in Marseilles, operating nine ships with 64 to 264 guests for an international market. Two new explorer vessels arrive in 2020, and Le Commandant Charcot icebreaker in 2021. In August 2019 Ponant acquired Paul Gauguin Cruises to expand its itineraries in French Polynesia. Ponant also partners with National Geographic, their photographer and expert joining each cruise. Many cruises have no single supplement. In the northern Summer all ships sail the UK and European coastlines from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, and west to Canada. For other months Grand Voyages reach South America, Antarctica, French Polynesia, and SE Asia. Themed European cruises focus on Golf, Classical Music, Jazz, Wellness, Bridge, Food and Wine. The eight larger ships have ice-strengthened hulls and Zodiacs for onshore exploration. There's a strong emphasis on coastal cruising, with long days in port, overnights, and late departures.

While only MY Le Ponant is a three-masted sailing barque, all nine vessels become your private yachts. Ashore, discover cultures and scenery unseen by large cruise ships. On board the smart décor and modern facilities just invite you to relax, whether privately in your stateroom, or the library, or with fellow guests over a drink, as you recount the day’s activities. Cuisine is the finest French, with gourmet dishes and fine wines (and special diets are catered for). With Ponant, the ‘destination’ is both on-shore discovery, and the ship. Though mainly French, guests include families, couples and groups of friends from diverse backgrounds and ages. The ships are stabilised for optimum sailing conditions. Ponant Yacht Cruises was awarded Cruise Critic Australia Editors’ Picks 2018 "Best for Luxury"; and “Best Adventure Cruise Line” by Cruise Passenger (Australasia) Readers’ Choice 2019.
