Pulau Mayo is a 30km long island lying just east of Bali and Lombok, and north of Sumbawa island in Indonesia, in the West Nusa Tenggara province. It lies under the shadow of Mt Tambora (2851m) to the east, which exploded in 1815. The eruption was one of the most powerful in recorded history, ejecting 10 billion tonnes of rock, and led to Europe’s Year Without a Summer in 1816.
