Ny-Ålesund is one of four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago in the Kingdom of Norway. It is administered by Kings Bay company, a Norwegian government enterprise. Lying within the Arctic Circle just 1255 km from the North Pole, it is the northernmost functional civilian settlement in the world, with a population varying from 35 to 180 (winter to summer). Rosendal is a small town at the western end of the Hardangerfjord in Hordaland, West Norway. Towering behind the town are mountains to over 1400 m within 10 km, and the Folgefonna National Park with three major glaciers. (There are no roads into the Park, get there by hiking or helicopter.) Sandefjord is a city of Norway, at the head of the Sandesfjordsfjord. The 10 km fjord runs N-S, and enters on the south to the Skagerrak, the strait between the SE coast of Norway, the SW coast of Sweden, and the Jutland peninsula of Denmark.
