Star Breeze cruises for 2020-2021

Star Breeze will be the second Windstar Cruises vessel to visit Australia, in December 2020, for six cruises that take in Australia’s coast including ports in Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Hobart. Also, cruise to New Zealand and circumnavigate the three islands visiting ports often missed by the usual cruise ships. With only 312 passengers, guests will enjoy the more personal experience – the ‘open bridge’ policy says it all. Consider the 13-night journey from Bali to Cairns in November 2020: six fascinating and rarely visited ports in Indonesia, plus Thursday Island and Lizard Island. Or, take the return 12-night cruise that visits four Indonesian ports in March 2021. Meanwhile, following a lengthening and refit in early 2020, the ‘new’ Star Breeze will appear in March 2020 to offer Panama crossings and visits to ports on the Pacific coast of Central America. From May to early September 2020 take 11-night in-depth voyages between Anchorage and Vancouver along the fjord and glacier coast of Alaska. Cruises are very port intensive with a focus on smaller ports less visited by crowds. Itineraries range from 7 to 18 nights.

Life aboard Star Breeze

This boutique ‘yacht’ at 13,000 GT with 312 guests debuted with Windstar Cruises in 2015, refitted after its former life as Seabourn Spirit. The October 2019/March 2020 rebuild adds 50 new suites and gives it a slicker profile, four new more-efficient engines, larger pool, new restaurants, three-bedroom Grand Owner’s Suite and yoga studio. And it will add 20l years to the ship’s lifespan. The ship has stylish lines, high quality fittings, premium features, down to electric blackout blinds in the cabins. The open bridge policy means you can learn first-hand about the ship’s operation. Public spaces include the piano bar, Wheel House, Radio Room, Library and pool area. Clientele are mostly sophisticated, well-travelled couples who want to relax in an unstructured yet chic atmosphere. Dress is casual, and friendly service is from the mostly Indonesian and Filipino crew. With a draft of only 5 m access is available to smaller ports. Allow for paying tips and for bottled water.

Accommodation
Staterooms are on decks 4, 5 and 6. All staterooms have ocean views, most with queen beds (or twins if preferred), also flat-screen TV with DVD player, and Bose SoundDock speakers for Apple iPods. Staterooms are comfortable, with Egyptian cotton bedding, spacious bath that features granite counter tops, ample storage, and a roomy shower (no bath tubs) with massage shower head, accompanied by L’Occitane bath products and waffle-weave robe and slippers. Fresh fruit and flowers arrive daily. There’s wireless Internet access (pay), and private safe. Room service is around the clock.

There’s now a brand new three-bedroom Grand Owner’s Suite. Also, the expansive 49 sq.m. Owner’s Suite gives you everything offered in a stateroom, plus a sitting area and separate in-room dining space. There are two slightly smaller Classic Suites, 36 Balcony Suites (with French balconies), and the remainder Ocean View Suites. Of course, all have controllable AC, and nightly turn-down service. The mini-bar is stocked daily and payable for drinks taken (15% bar surcharge). All cabins have two outside-view portholes. There are 10 pairs of adjoining suites, and four modified accessible suites.

Food and Dining
Star Breeze has two primary dining venues. AmphorA restaurant (deck 3) offers gourmet, course-by-course cuisine in the evenings. Signature dishes created by master chefs are featured. Veranda restaurant (deck 7 aft) offers casual buffet and full-service dining for breakfast and lunch. All dining is open seating, so you dine with whom and whenever you wish. Non-alcoholic beverages and coffees are inclusive. The March 2020 expansion adds two new restaurants, with details yet to be revealed.

For dining under the stars, make a reservation for Candles Grill (also deck 7) next to the pool that features grilled seafood, steaks and skewers. At the bar, hot and cold hors d’oeuvres appear at cocktail times. At no extra charge, a ‘Cuisine de l’Amour’ romantic dinner for two can be served in your cabin. With candle.

Entertainment
The Compass Rose lounge has a small casino and a dance floor where a trio often plays their music. The main lounge is also used for social functions, small scale shows, occasional cabaret acts, business meetings, and nightly informative port talks and destination briefings. More personal entertainment will be a DVD in your cabin late at night, or an after-dinner stroll on the deck. Or, relax in the small library. There is a small fitness centre with treadmills, exercise cycles and sauna. WindSpa packages at extra cost can be pre-booked.

There’s an enlarged pool and hot tub surrounded by a teak-decked court yard. Since daily activities mostly centre around the water, guests have unlimited access to all water sports equipment that includes kayaks, windsurfs, water skis, and snorkels. There’s a water sports platform aft of the ship.
