Azura — Ship Review Rating: 4.3 out of 5 based on 3 ratings.

Life aboard Azura
From around March to October Azura (‘Sky Blue’) sails out of Southampton. Cruises range from 2 to 19 nights, and destinations include the sub-Arctic Norwegian fjords, Iceland, Baltic Sea (with overnight at St Petersburg), the Iberian Peninsula, the Canary Islands, and Mediterranean Sea as far as Greece. For the other months she offers 14-night cruises around the Eastern Caribbean out of Bridgetown. There are plenty of onboard activities for the sea days and nights crossing the Atlantic between Southampton and the Caribbean, at a really good fare.

Entering service in 2010, at 115,055 GT and carrying 3096 passengers, Azura is one of P&O’s three largest cruise ships. Sporting a distinctive rounded bow, Azura is filled with modern luxuries and innovations, including an open-air movie screen and an atrium dance floor. Expect a large ship feel with comfortable surroundings and a British flavour. The ship is well suited to families and adult couples, though note there are 18 single cabins adjacent to the atrium. Children are cared for in each age-group, and there are a night nursery and family shore programs. The ship is filled with British artworks, lounges, bars, child-free Retreat, and quiet areas.

Accommodation
There are five types of stateroom and 25 price grades. Fifty-eight percent of the cabins have a balcony. Staterooms have twin beds or king-sized bed, adjustable AC, safe, vanity writing desk with mirror, good storage areas, wide-screen TV (with major news channels, sports and movies), telephone, mini-fridge, tea/coffee-making facilities, daily steward service, and hair dryer. Inside staterooms have a picture mirror. Outsides have a picture window or porthole. Cabins with private balconies have sliding doors that open to a patio set with two recliner chairs and a small table. Some balcony cabins have a bath with shower. Suite and Penthouse Staterooms are much larger and come with many extras, including butler service. Allow for service and additional charges for, say, room-service dining, depending on the five types of accommodation.

Suites are very spacious, with shower over a bathtub, DVD player, mini-stereo, coffee machine, ironing facilities, and lounge area with sofa. Special touches include bathrobe and slippers, ironing board, fruit basket, flowers, champagne and chocolates on arrival, and daily canapés. Penthouse Suites are simply more spacious again, and all suites include butler service. Some cabins have 3 or 4 berths and inter-connecting doors for families, three cabins are wheel-chair accessible, and the 18 single cabins have wide single beds.

Food and Dining
The ship has three main restaurants that offer six-course silver service traditional British dining, with a range of other cuisines. Opt for fixed seating at either of two set times for dinner, or anywhere at any table dining. Venezia is the main self-service restaurant, where food is available all day. Verona is a waiter-served Italian trattoria serving pizzas, burgers and pasta. Alternative restaurants, at extra charge for non-suite guests, are: Sindhu, an Indian/British à la carte fine dining restaurant, overseen by Michelin-star chef Atul Kochhar; Seventeen, with à la carte classic fine dining; and The Glass House, for steak and seafood grills with wines selected by sommelier Olly Smith.

During the day the Java coffee bar serves coffee, chocolates, tea and snacks while at night it serves pre-dinner drinks, adjacent to the atrium dance floor. There are many other lounges and bars worth discovering on a long voyage, including a modern interpretation of a London pub with its darts, karaoke, talent shows, 'pub night', dancing and sport screenings. Afternoon tea is served daily. In addition, 24-hour room service is available in all cabins.

Entertainment
The 800-seat two-deck Playhouse Theatre is an excellent venue for shows, with two large video screens either side of the stage. The in-house Headliners Production Company features outstanding song-and-dance presentations superbly produced for each P&O ship at its Southampton studios. The ship features a dance floor in the three-deck atrium. Malabar and Manhattan are the ship’s multi-cultural night venues with cabaret, live bands and dancing. The Planet Bar sponsors day activities and becomes a nightclub in the evening. On the top deck is a huge open-air cinema screen. The Retreat is an al fresco spa terrace for adults.

The sports court has amenities for tennis, cricket, football, shuffleboard, quoits and golf. The ship’s gym offers personal trainers and the latest technogym equipment. There are three main pools, one covered by a skydome. The Thermal Suite spa provides natural skin treatments while the Oasis spa has rooms with ocean-view balconies. The Retreat is Azura’s open-air spa that offers al fresco spa treatments. Azura is great for families and children of all age groups, and includes a Night Nursery for under-5s.
