We use & recommend Viator.com otherwise search online & call us if you need help. Or just rent a taxi/pushbikes/tour/charter from the wharf when you berth, often the best value but be among the first ashore!
Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
A world voyage is the ultimate in sea travel, usually transiting the Suez and Panama Canals, facing the oceans in stabilised comfort, without having to pack and unpack for three months. On board are glamorous evenings, top entertainment, and socialising. On shore are great opportunities to see diverse cultures. Grand Cruises of over 30 nights typically circle South America or the Pacific, or make many stops while repositioning say from Asia to the Mediterranean. Your choices are – the ship, the itinerary, the price, and sailing the whole journey or just a segment.
Most of the world cruises sail January through March (Cunard and P&O ships, Crystal Serenity and Pacific Princess), and May through August for Ocean Princess and Dawn Princess. Princess ships circumnavigate the world returning to their departure point; others double back without crossing the Pacific or Atlantic as such. All of the large cruise ships visit Australasia, and offer four to six segments, a segment lasting a week to two months. Many cruises spend one to three nights in major ports to permit worthwhile on-shore tours.
Amsterdam’s 2014 Grand Voyage circles the Pacific out of Vancouver (75 nights). Dawn Princess departs Sydney in May 2014 for a 105-night world cruise via Suez and Panama Canals. Ocean Princess departs Sydney for Cape Town and then Dover in March 2014 and repeats the journey in March 2015 so plan your savings ahead of time. Pacific Princess circles the globe departing Los Angeles in January 2015 (112 nights). For luxury grand cruises look to SevenSeas’ Voyager and Mariner, Seabourn Sojourn, Oceania’s Nautica, Silver Whisper and Prinsendam – in some cases join sectors. Be creative.
