A world voyage is the ultimate in sea travel, usually transiting the Suez and Panama Canals, facing the oceans in stabilised comfort, without having to pack and unpack for three months. On board are glamorous evenings, top entertainment, and socialising. On shore are great opportunities to see diverse cultures. Grand Cruises of over 30 nights typically circle South America or the Pacific, or make many stops while repositioning, say, from Asia to the Mediterranean. Your choices are – the ship, the itinerary, the price, and sailing the whole journey or just a segment.

Most of the world cruises sail January through March (Cunard ships, P&O’s Aurora and Arcadia, HAL’s Amsterdam, Pacific Princess, and Oceania’s Insignia), and June through August for Sea Princess. Some World Cruises circumnavigate the globe returning to their departure point; others double back without crossing the Pacific or Atlantic as such. All of the large cruise ships that visit Australasia offer four to six segments, a segment lasting a week to two months. Many cruises spend one to three nights in major ports to permit worthwhile on-shore tours.

In the coming year there are over 600 cruises of 30 or more nights. Grand Cruises sail giant circles, such as: Queen Elizabeth world circumnavigation January 2018; Queen Mary 2 New York/Southampton to Australia via Cape Town, return via Suez January 2018; Queen Victoria Southampton to circumnavigate South America January 2018, and World Cruise 2019; Arcadia World Cruise from Southampton January 2019; and Sea Princess World Cruise from Australia/NZ June 2018. For luxury grand cruises look to SevenSeas’ Voyager and Mariner, Seabourn Sojourn, Oceania’s Nautica, Silver Whisper, and Prinsendam.
