We use & recommend Viator.com otherwise search online & call us if you need help. Or just rent a taxi/pushbikes/tour/charter from the wharf when you berth, often the best value but be among the first ashore!
Keep in mind that if you go it alone and something happens like the taxi/bus breaks down and you end up being late back to the ship it will not wait for you unless it is advised. On the other hand if it is a ship-booked tour there are no problems as they are in contact with the tour companies.
Cruises visit the island groups of Melanesia (New Guinea, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Fiji) and Polynesia (Samoa, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, French Polynesia/Tahiti and Pitcairn Island). Melanesia’s islands are mostly high volcanic, while Polynesia’s islands are low reefs and atolls. Popular activities on shore are market-shopping, water sports, and taking in the stunning views. These islands hold a fascination for city-dwellers, who envy the carefreeness of island life and culture.
Fifteen ships from cruise lines Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, Princess, P&O Australia and RCI offer three- to five-star sailings. Many cruises embark from Sydney and Brisbane, relocation cruises are trans-Pacific, and Grand Cruises (ex North America) circle the North and South Pacific. The growth of South Pacific cruising gives the traveller a wealth of choices! Since there are many sea days with larger vessels, select a ship with on-board activities that suit your lifestyle. From Cairns smaller expedition vessels (Coral Princess and True North) make port-intensive explorations around Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Many luxury vessels cruise out of Papeete in French Polynesia.
Ships departing Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland head for New Caledonia, Tuvalu and Fiji. Cruises mostly range from 7 to 14 nights. Trans-Pacific cruises have lower fares – for example, Oosterdam and Volendam each September and April. Visit French Polynesia ex USA (Statendam, Sapphire and Golden Princess), ex Australia (two Princess, three RCI, two Carnival), or from Papeete in French Polynesia (Paul Gauguin, Pacific and Ocean Princess, Marina, Silver Shadow, and Seven Seas Mariner). Seriously, consider Queen Victoria in January 2014 rom Santiago (Chile) to Brisbane over 22 nights, taking in Easter Island and Pitcairn Island. Grand cruises of 75 nights circling the Pacific include HAL’s Amsterdam in September 2014 (75 nights). Three world-class small explorer vessels sail Papua New Guinea waters and nearby islands: True North, National Geographic Orion, and Coral Princess.

Featured South Pacific Cruise Ports
| Cruises from Easter Island Most cruise ships make a scenic pass of the island, and as few as 30% tender successfully to shore, there being no harbour and the weather is problematic. (Serious sight-seers arrive by air from Chile mainland.) One of the most isolated islands in the world, this triangle of volcanic rock in the South Pacific is 2,300 km off the west coast of Chile. It is intriguing, its history is as unclear as it is mysterious. Isolated for centuries from the outside world, Rapa Nui, the people of the island, developed their own distinctive culture. Huge figures carved of volcanic rock, called moai, stand on rectangular stone platforms known as ahu. (You can see one on the roadside in Viña del Mar, Valparaiso.) |

| Cruises from Lautoka Lautoka is situated on the western side of Viti Levu, the largest island in Fiji, and just 20 km north of Nadi. The Fiji archipelago lies just to the western side of the International Date Line. Lautoka is Fiji's second largest city. Though a popular tourist destination, it does not rely on tourism for its economy. Known as the Sugar City, it is home to the largest sugar mill in the southern hemisphere, which is its largest employer. A very clean and environmentally friendly city, the Botanical Gardens and Children's Park are wonderful. The main street of the city, Vitogo Parade, has been decorated with the planting of royal palm trees on one side and this is quite a unique feature. |
|
| Cruises from Rarotonga Rarotonga is the emerald jewel of the South Pacific. It lies midway between French Polynesia to the east, and Samoa and Tonga to the west. One of 15 Cook Islands, it is a popular tourist destination. Its chief town is Avarua, a tender port on the north coast. A 32 km peripheral road will take you around the island, and bush walks reveal lush inland scenery and volcanic peaks. Te Manga, at 658 m, is the highest peak on the island. The island is surrounded by a lagoon, best seen to the S and SE. |
|
| Cruises from Papeete The city of Papeete (Tahitian Pape'ete; pop. 27,000) is the capital of Tahiti, the largest of the French Polynesian Islands. With its pleasant warm tropical climate, city-lovers will enjoy Papeete's chic shops, specialist stores and boutiques, together with the lively mix of French, Polynesian, and Chinese cultures. Shop around for the best hire car deal and enjoy driving along the broad avenue by the famous waterfront, and then venture forth along the four-lane express way that links the city with the trendy suburban districts of Punaauia and Paea on the west coast. Its suburbs creep up the mountains overlooking the city and sprawl for miles along the coast in both directions. |
|
| Cruises from Noumea Situated in the south of the country's main island Grande Terre, Noumea is the capital of the French Territory of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean. It enjoys a sunny, moderate climate, and truly is a vibrant cosmopolitan city, where the South Pacific meets the Riviera. The city maintains much of New Caledonia's unique mix of French and old Melanesian culture, while the U.S. wartime military influence lingers. This is evidenced both in the warmth that many New Caledonian people feel towards the U.S., as well as some of the very 'American' names of several of the quarters of the city. |
