Cruises from White Island
White Island (Whakaari) is an active volcano 48 km off the shores of Whakatane located in the Bay of Plenty on New Zealand's beautiful North Island. It is New Zealand’s most active cone volcano; indeed, it has been in a nearly continuous stage of smoking at least since it was 'discovered' and named by James Cook in 1769. The island is small, roughly circular, about 2 km across, and rises to just 321m. The volcano erupted on 9 December 2019 while 47 people were vising the island.
