Vlissingen (old English known as Flushing) is a port and a city in the southwestern Netherlands on the former island of Walcheren. Originally a fishing hamlet in the 6th century, its strategic location between the Scheldt river and the North Sea has made it into an important harbour ever since. In the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age Vlissingen was a main harbour for ships of the Dutch East India Company.
