Cruises from Taranto
Taranto, a coastal city in Puglia, Southern Italy, is the capital of the Province of Taranto. The city was actually founded in the 7th century BC by exiles from Sparta, to become one of its wealthiest and most important colonies. The Romans took over in the 3rd century BC, resulting in a decline in its fortunes. Sadly, the still remaining though collapsing historic Roman medieval centre is gritty and dirty, but it does have a lovely seaside promenade.
Today, the modern Italian industrial city of Taranto is home to wide promenades and expensive shops. It has a beautiful Cathedral and a stunning fishing port, with fantastic theatres, nightlife and scrumptious seafood.
