Cruises from Puerto Cortes
Puerto Cortés is a city of 126,000 located on the north Caribbean coast of Honduras. It is the largest seaport in Central America. The port is in a bay, and adjacent to the bay the city is built around the sizeable Alvarado lagoon, its longest diameter 4.5 km. The city has developed in the 20th C after the railroad reached the port, and its major export has been bananas.
Currently bananas, coffee, coconuts, hardwood, and flour are the principal exports. The original name of the city, Puerto de Caballos, was changed in 1869 to honour the Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés.
