Kawthaung is the southernmost city of Myanmar, known as Victoria Point under British rule until 1948. To the east across 4 km of water is Thailand. To the west is the Andaman Sea and Indian Ocean, and the southernmost of the Mergui Islands. Kawthaung has a tropical monsoon climate. The majority of people are Bamar, along with a mix of many enthnicities and languages, the most common language being Burmese. Local agricultural products include rubber, betel nut, cashew nut, coconut and palm oil.
