Langebaan is a town on Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape province of South Africa, 100km NNW of Cape Town. The town’s population is around 8000. From the bay, saltwater Langebaan Lagoon extends 17km to the south, parallel to the Atlantic Ocean beaches. The area’s history included visits by Portuguese, Dutch and French. The town Langebaan was founded in 1922 and used as a whaling station until the 1960s. Today vacationers enjoy the host of water sport and fishing opportunities this holiday resort town has to offer. The ecological history of Langebaan can be viewed at the West Coast Fossil Park.

The white sand beaches surrounding the clear waters of the Langebaan Lagoon are one of the main attractions of Langebaan. The mild climate and protected waters of the lagoon make Langebaan popular for sailing, kayaking, kitesurfing and fishing, and the town offers numerous holiday facilities for water sport enthusiasts. To protect its culture as a fishing, holiday and retirement village, the town allows no industries. The area around the lagoon is part of West Coast National Park, particularly well known for its 300 species of bird life and for the spring flowers on display from August to October. The lagoon is important for migratory birds from the Northern Hemisphere.

Wildlife in the park includes large antelope such as eland, red hartebeest, bontebok, kudu, gemsbok, steenbok, mountain zebra, duiker and ostriches. A tour around the lagoon will take you to Kraalbaai Beach, with clear blue turquoise water and white sand. Take a swim and watch sand sharks and manta rays. To the west, out to sea, whales can be spotted during October and November. You’ll also see that kite-surfing is popular. In town look for the shop Gaia Crystals, their products are enticing.
