Makura (also Makira, Namakir, Emwae) Island lies in the Shepherd group of islands, 66km NNE of Port Vila the capital of Vanuatu. Vanuatu lies at the centre of triangle made up of the Solomon Islands, Fiji and New Caledonia in the South Pacific. Makura is the central peak of a volcanic caldera, with Emae and Matoso islands the only visible parts of the caldera rim. There’s a submarine volcano just 2 km to the west of Makura. Most inhabitants live in Malakof village in the NW. The island has white sandy beaches in the north and NW.

Makura Island is only 2km long and 1km wide, rising from the coastal village Malakof to the summit of Saksak (297 m) in the SE. The beaches to the north and east are edged with coconut palms and thatched shading. The village Malakof and the island are largely undeveloped and a relaxed indigenous population. Makura or Namakura is the local language

Interestingly, another submarine volcano, Kuwae, 40km to the north, is thought to have erupted in 1452-1453. The eruption is linked with weather cooling in the northern hemisphere, and some suggest the end of the Byzantine, Roman and Mayan Empires were associated with droughts and poor harvests. Vanuatu, its host nation, may be the only country with what appears to be a caldera on its flag.
