Qui Nhon (Quy Nhon) lies on the easternmost coast of central Vietnam, facing the South China Sea. With a population of around 300,000, it is a growing centre of commerce and tourism. Its agricultural and fishing industries are giving way to export-imports, seaport services, and fish culture. The Phu Tai Industrial Park is a centre for garden furniture manufacturing based on timber from its forests. To the east of the city is an industrial ‘island’ development, Nhon Hoi Economic Zone, still under development, for industry, residences, oil refinery and deep water port. A 2.5km bridge joins the development to Qui Nhon.

The city faces the sea separated by 4 km of sweeping sandy beach, presenting a seascape of small fishing vessels. Likely, large fishing nets will be seen stretched out on poles just off the calm-water shoreline. Laid out along the wide sandy beach you’ll see many round Vietnamese fishing-basket-boats, about 2m in diameter. In the middle of town on the flat coastal plain is a converted airstrip, now transformed into community areas and shops. Alongside modern buildings are older homes and small businesses, roads filled with motor cycles, Cham temples and pagodas, churches (vestiges of Portuguese Jesuits in the 1620s), and an occasional shell-pocked structure, remnant of the war. This was an American base, and old military vehicles are still on the roads.

Look out for the ancient pair of Champa Towers in Qui Nhon. Hire a motor scooter to get around. Dine at a roadside eatery, take a city tour by taxi, line up a cooking class, and see how the city has developed over the past 40 or so years of peace. Explore the coast and fishing huts, and inland rivers and mountains, to discover some most beautiful land formations and scenery. While not on the main tourist map, visitors say it is a must-see.
