Lan Ha Bay is on the far north coast of Vietnam, just 110km from the border of the Republic of China. It opens to the Gulf of Tonkin, a northern arm of the South China Sea. (It was an incident here in 1964 that led to the Vietnam war.) The bay encompasses 300 weathered limestone islands jutting vertically out of the water, and lined with numerous white sand beaches. The 50 km bay shoreline and islands are rather isolated, though now attracting more tourists who reach the bay from Halong City, which in turn is linked by a main road to China.

Historically, the region is a ‘cradle of mankind’; and much more recently since 1883 occupied by the French; and since 1945 a coal mining centre. Lan Ha bay is more closely reached from Cat Ba town. The bay is home to colourful junks and fishing vessels, floating communities, and limestone caves replete with stalactites. Around 200 species of fish, 500 species of mollusc, 400 species of arthropod, and numerous hard and soft coral live in the waters, and larger marine animals in the area include seals and three species of dolphin.

Kayaking is an ideal way to explore the waters and caves. At night bioluminescent plankton light the water. Lan Ha Bay is home to many fish, oyster, sea acorn and duck farms, so as you meander around the islets you’ll learn about the fisher-communities’ culture. The bay is a photographer’s dream location.
