Côn Son (Côn Lôn) is the largest island of the Côn Ð?o archipelago, 80 km off the coast of southern Vietnam, in the South China Sea. The small township has 5000 residents. Few tourists arrive to clutter the beautiful beaches. This is changing as more resorts are opening, and sustainable ecotourism is expanding. Many of the 16 islands and islets became part of the Côn Ð?o National Park in 1984, to protect turtles, dolphins, dugongs, seagrass meadows, mangroves and coral reefs. Remnants of the French colonial era are evident in the crumbling French villas. Learn about the island’s history.

Con Son has an interesting history, some of which includes: named the Isles of the Satyrs in Ptolemy’s Geography (c.150 AD); visited by Marco Polo in 1292; settled by the English East India Company in 1702; French colonial government from 1787; an infamous French prison isle with the notorious "tiger cages" before and during the Vietnam war - Southeast Asia's Devil's Island. The main prison walls are still in town as a reminder, and the gaols and cemeteries have become pilgrimage sites to the thousands of Vietnamese who suffered and died on the island between 1862 and 1975.

The uncrowded island has much to offer: colourful trees and flowers, wide boulevards, roadside ponds, and beaches, all easily reached on motorbike. Visit the morning market for seafood, fruits, vegetables, and of course your morning Vietnamese breakfast and coffee. Then the afternoon market opens. At other times go swimming or get back on your motorbike. One kilometre south at An Hai bay meet the pearlers and fishermen and their circular bamboo vessels. A road goes half way around the island, around 26 km end to end. In the evening the chairs and tables of roadside stalls come out, and you can enjoy the day’s catch.
