Cruz Bay (population 2700) is the main town on the island of St John, in the US Virgin Islands. The three main islands and many smaller ones that constitute US Virgin Islands are located in the Leeward Island of the Eastern Caribbean. Cruz Bay is linked to other islands in the region by ferries, and tourists frequent the bars, shops and restaurants overlooking the bay. The beach has soft white sand, a designated swimming area, and space for day boaters to anchor. The Virgin Islands National Park preserves approximately 60% of the island. The park is well-known for scuba diving and snorkeling, and has miles of hiking trails through the tropical rainforest.

Most parts of the island of St John island can be reached by road within 10 km from Cruz Bay. Beaches, coral reefs, hiking trails, and natural sites are the park's main attractions. The beaches of Virgin Islands National Park are regularly named some of the best in the world. The park protects dozens of historic ruins from the colonial and plantation eras through the 1950s. For example, the Annaberg plantation is a partially restored sugar factory and windmill located just east of Mary's Point. Wild donkeys, deer, mongoose, pigs, goats, birds, iguanas, skinks, tortoises, frogs, and crabs inhabit the park.

Much of the island's waters, coral reefs, and shoreline have been protected by being included in the national park. The main tourist season is from December to April, outside the Atlantic hurricane season. The island’s nickname is ‘Love City’, and the bayside town exudes a care-free, relaxed atmosphere amidst hippies, seafarers, and reggae devotees. Just enjoy wandering around the bayside and its palm-fenced beaches, spend up on cool drinks at a bar side, and wander around some more.
