Virgin Gorda (‘Fat Virgin’) is the third largest and the second most populated of the British Virgin Islands. The main business centre is Spanish Town, to the SW of this elongated island. Ships tender to port. The European discoverer of the islands was Columbus who, it is claimed, gave the name ‘Fat Virgin’ as the profile of the island looked like a woman lying on her side. From Spanish Town to any part of the island is only around 10 km. The main tourist attraction is The Baths, about two kilometres SW of Spanish Town. Here are large granite boulders piled along the beach, forming tidal pools, grottoes and archways.

To the SE of Spanish Town is Copper Mine Point, where Spaniards originally mined silver, and later British miners built tunnels under the sea mining copper. Gorda Peak National Park is home to butterflies, hummingbirds, the Virgin Gorda gecko (the world’s smallest lizard), and a variety of plants. Climb the observation tower to view the surrounding islands. Of course expect water activities – sailing, snorkelling amongst the corals, and swimming. Explore the bays and beaches.

The legendry admirals Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins in 1595 anchored with a fleet at Bitter End (at the far north), and today it is home to the world renowned Bitter End Yacht Club and mooring for megayachts. There, the harbours of North Sound and Gorda Sound are one of the world's great watersports meccas, with over 1,200 hectares of protected waters.
