El Guamache is a cruise ship and ferry port in the Bay of Guamache, on the mid south coast of Isla de Margarita, 25 km off the coast of Venezuela. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498, the local natives, named Guaiqueries, received the conquering Spaniards with open arms, later to become slaves to the Spanish Crown. At the port there is a small booth with tour operators and information, as well as some vendors selling souvenirs. Cruise passengers can rent jet skis at the port, as well as paddle boats and banana boats.

The island was fortified against the threat of pirate attacks, and several of these fortifications remain today. The breathtaking scenery, excellent hotels and nightlife and duty-free shopping are all attracting tourists in a booming industry. There are few attractions within walking distance of the port, but rent a car or taxi to explore the island. Drinks and snacks are available from numerous bars. Located in the Caribbean sea, the island offers many beaches to explore, ranging from crowded to solitary, with most of them unoccupied.

There are at least 50 magnificent Margarita beaches that are scattered along 170km of coastline, but the beach of Playa Puerto Cruz is one of the most popular with tourists. Originally lured to the island by the giant pearls off its coast, tourists now visit Margarita (“Pearl”) Island to enjoy its gorgeous beaches, friendly culture and exotic goods. From El Guamache the nearest town is Porlamar, while Corpotur and the state tourism office are located in the adjoining town of Los Robles. Visitors find it well worth the investment to get out and visit these towns.
