Snake River is a major river in the Pacific Northwest of the US, arising in Yellowstone National Park, flowing into Columbia River and thence the Pacific Ocean. It rushes through rugged canyons and low hills to an alluvial plain, its energy tapped by major dams and electricity generation. Large numbers of salmon migrate upriver as far as Shoshone Falls. Below the falls is Hells Canyon, one of the most treacherous parts of the river.

Hell's Canyon is the deepest canyon (2,400 m) in North America. White water rafters, jet boaters, campers, fishermen, hikers and hunters all enjoy this protected National Recreation Area. Some portions are designated Wilderness, but much is open to motor vehicles. At strategically located look-outs, visitors thoroughly enjoy the breathtaking views.

Interestingly part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, passes through this area and it is a real drawcard for visitors. Also of historical interest is the Nez Perce National Historical Park that is home to numerous battle sites from the 1800s, such as the Big Hole National Battlefield. Don’t forget to visit Downtown Clarkston with its 150 shops, including specialty clothing stores, and immerse yourself in the current history of this fascinating port.
